Berkswell Cricket Club is one of the top clubs in the West Midlands and is situated at the Lant Sports and Community Ground on Meeting House Lane in Balsall Common.
The Club provides cricket for all from the age of 7-years, with opportunities for boys, girls, men and women, from fun social cricket all the way through to the semi-professional level played by the men’s 1st XI on Saturdays. The 1st XI currently competes in the Premier Division of the Birmingham and District Premier League’s Premier Division, the highest standard available outside the County game.
Warwickshire batting legend Dominic Ostler has been Club Captain since 2006, leading a squad packed with professional cricketers past and present. Among those is former Warwickshire skipper and England One Day International Darren Maddy, who can be seen in Berkswell’s colours several games per season, on such weekends as he is not required to fulfil his role as Director of Cricket at Solihull School.
The Berkswell Success Story
Berkswell Cricket Club was established in 1896 and finally played in the Birmingham and District Premier League’s Premier Division for the first time in 2012 after winning the Division 1 Championship the previous Summer. The Club finished in a creditable 4th position in their first season in the top-flight and has finished in the top 6 ever since. The true pinnacle of the Club’s 120-year history arrived in 2016 when the Club won the Premier Division title for the first and only time in its history.
The Premier Division sits at the top of a four-division league, which in turn sits above a four-county pyramid feeder system (Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire and Staffordshire).
The Birmingham League’s Premier Division is widely regarded as one of the best in the UK, offering the highest level of cricket outside the county game. The league’s reputation means that member Clubs are often able to sign well-known professionals from the Test Arena. Famous names to have played in the Birmingham League include international stars such as Alan Donald, Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram and Andrew Flower to name just a few.
