“Are you Andy with a racquet? …….. then have a ‘Murray moment'” say representatives of Berkswell & Balsall Common Tennis Club on Meeting House Lane in Balsall Common as they throw open their gates open for free sessions for all this Sunday 18th August 2013, as part of their celebration of tennis and Andy Murray’s historic Wimbledon Championship title win in July.
“Are you Andy with a racquet? …….. then have a ‘Murray moment'” say representatives of Berkswell & Balsall Common Tennis Club on Meeting House Lane in Balsall Common as they throw open their gates open for free sessions for all tomorrow (Sunday 28th July 2013) in the wake of Andy Murray’s historic Wimbledon Championship title win earlier this month.
Organisers of last year’s Diamond Jubilee fete and party in the park in Balsall Common have announced plans to run a community event along similar lines at the same venue on Saturday 28th September 2013. The Lant Community Sports Ground on Meeting House Lane will play host to a village fete by day, followed by a party in the park with live music in the evening. The plan is to repeat the teas, the stalls and wide range of children’s activities, alongside new attractions to keep the event fresh.
The cross-community organising committee met for the first time this month [February] and is chaired again this year by Marie-Louise Marsden of the Balsall Common Lions. The scale of planning and organisation required to stage a successful event with such different afternoon and evening activities is huge and so the search is already on for members of the community to get involved, as Marie-Louise explains:
“I am delighted to have been asked again to organise the 2013 village community event. The initial response to a 2013 Village Fete and Party in the Park has been very enthusiastic. Our first meeting was very well attended and offers of support from others unable to attend were also very positive. But we already know we’re going to need more help. The scale of what we’re aiming to achieve means we’re going to need more help with anything from finance and publicity, to technical assistance with sound and lighting plus the additional helping hands we’re going to need on the day.”
Organisers were also keen to use the same venue as 2012, the Lant Community and Sports Ground on Meeting House Lane, but later in the year this time, to avoid a repeat of damage to the cricket ground mid-season, upon which a high standard of cricket is played during the summer.
“This year’s date is 28th September 2013 – so as to avoid a clash with Balsall Common Primary School’s centenary celebrations and also damage to the cricket field during mid-season – but in future the organising committee will be aiming for an annual event on the 3rd weekend in September. We are very happy that the Lant Community and Sports Association, which is best known to many as the home of our local cricket or tennis club, is joining us in the venture.
Balsall Common can expect a spectacular event tomorrow evening (Wednesday 31st October) in Meeting House Lane as the Halloween-themed bonfire night takes place in front of crowds of monsters and ghouls.
