Rugby: Berkswell take spoils in Intermediate Cup

Steve Wake reports on Berkswell and Balsall’s Midlands Intemediate Cup 2nd round encounter against Stourbridge Lions (played on Saturday 16th October 2010):

Stourbridge Lions (19) – Berkswell & Balsall (24)

In an enjoyable entertaining game Berkswell progressed to the third round of the Midlands cup with victory at Stourbridge. Each side scored three tries, but B’s kicking was much improved this week, as they managed all three conversions and a penalty. Stourbridge’s young side came back strongly in the final minutes and it was the visitors who were hanging on for the victory at the end.

It took Berkswell just nine minutes to race into a crucial 10-0 lead. First Sam Bignall, returning at full-back for his first appearance of the season, kicked a penalty from 30 meters, and then he converted a try from Joe Cart to extend the lead further; Cart the final beneficiary of an extended driving maul by the B’s forwards.

Rugby: Off-colour Berkswell slip to home defeat

Rugby: Steve Wake reports on Berkswell’s Midlands 2 West encounter played on Saturday 9th October 2010:

Berkswell & Balsall 15 – Bedworth 31

Midlands 2 West (South)

An off-colour home performance from Berkswell saw them lose a game which, had they played to their normal tempo and as a cohesive unit, they may have won. Some poor decisions behind the scrum coupled with the pack playing too much as individuals when the ball was in hand, saw them go down to a workmanlike Bedworth side. The visitors front eight hit the rucks and mauls at pace and rarely gave B’s time to set-up good possession, or dominate territorially. Berkswell were on top in the scrums, resulting in two second half push-over tries, but had no answer to a fine display of both controlled kicking and decisive running from the visitor’s No.10, who was often available to clear the ball deep into the home half, when under pressure and also scored one, and set-up two, of Bedworth’s tries.

Rugby: Berkswell & Balsall suffer defeat at hands of Barkers Butts

Report  by Steve Wake on match played 2nd October 2010

Barkers Butts – 25 Berkswell & Balsall – 10

Midlands 2 West (South)

An effective, committed defence and an opportunistic eye for try-scoring by the visitors, coupled with profligate wastage of late, clear-cut, chances from the home side ensured this was a close game. Barkers were just five points ahead with the game well into the final quarter; but two tries in the last twelve minutes ensured Butts’ victory. Berkswell captain Joe Cart scored both his side’s tries – one a 40 meter sprint following a smart interception – but Barkers deserved the victory as their three-quarters eventually saw them home.
