Rugby: Berkswell suffer more heartache on the road in error strewn clash

Steve Wake reports on more heartache on the road for Berkswell and Balsall in their Midlands West Division 2 encounter at Kidderminster:

Kidderminster (23) – Berkswell & Balsall (8)

It was a third fruitless trip into Worcestershire inside five weeks for Berkswell, as they turned in an error strewn performance. Kidderminster weren’t any great shakes themselves, but had victory handed to them by the visitors. Some very strange decisions from the referee didn’t help either side, but this is one best forgotten by the B’s.

Kidderminster started with a penalty in the first four minutes, but as B’s settled down they found holes in the home defence. A searing break down the right-wing by Phil Allport ended with a brave dive for a try, as he was tackled in the corner, giving Berkswell a slender lead after 11 minutes. The home side were mostly on top however and a long period of territorial dominance saw them camped in the visitor’s half. A second penalty was all they had to show for it though, after 19 minutes, as the B’s defence made several brave and important tackles near their own line.

Rugby: Berkswell steal last-gasp triumph in Earlsdon derby

Saturday 13th November – Steve Wake reports on Berkswell’s local derby triumph over Earlsdon in their Midlands West Division 2 encounter:

Berkswell & Balsall – 24 Earlsdon – 21

With just six minutes to go Berkswell were staring at defeat to bottom-of-the-table Earlsdon, but not for the first time this season, their forwards rescued the match with two late scores from set-scrums. B’s welcomed back several players after injury and unavailability and took the points in this key match between the two bottom sides. Full-back Jamie Knott brought an assurance to the kicking duties which had been lacking in previous weeks, Captain Joe Cart led by example from the back-row and a fine all-action performance from Richard Waite at Scrum-half all helped to steer Berkswell to their late victory. Earlsdon had worked their way back from an early 10-0 deficit, to lead 21-10 with just minutes left. The manner of the defeat must have been particularly hard for them, as they still look for their first victory of the season.

Rugby: Berkswell suffer despite excellent forwards display

Steve Wake reports on Berkswell’s Midlands West Division 2 (South) encounter at Droitwich on 30th October 2010:

Droitwich 33 – Berkswell & Balsall 25

In a match that was similar in style to last week’s game at Pershore, Berkswell again suffered defeat in an open, entertaining game of rugby. Their forwards again took the plaudits on a day when they managed their first bonus point of the season. In fact it could easily have been two bonus points, but an injury time drop goal by the home side moved them eight points clear. This time it was the Worcestershire hosts who raced into an early lead before B’s, who again suffered from an afternoon of poor kicking, clawed themselves back into the lead going into the final minutes, only for their hosts to snatch victory with three late kicks.

Rugby: Berkswell suffer reverse at hands of Pershore

Rugby: Steve Wake reports on Berkswell & Balsall’s reverse in their Midlands West Division 2 (South) encounter played 23rd October 2010:

Pershore – 36 Berkswell & Balsall – 24

Another league reverse for Berkswell and another game in which they struggled to turn territorial dominance into victory. With several players unavailable, B’s were forced to make six changes from last week’s winning side. Mistakes behind the scrum gifted Pershore two of their tries after a promising start from the visitors had seen them lead 10-0. Five unanswered home tries in the middle of the match saw Pershore turn the game around and lead 31-10, before Berkswell came back with two tries in the final quarter.

Rugby Club Turns Pink to raise £1400 for Cancer Charity

Berkswell Rugby Club's Pink Cancer Charity Day

A good news story from a few weeks ago …

Steve Wake reports:

The clubhouse and bar were a vision in pink, and alive with feminine chatter … hardly an an admission Berkswell and Balsall Rugby Club (BBRFC) would normally be happy to make … as the players carried out their normal Saturday afternoon masculine mayhem on the nearby pitch.
