Solihull Council officials rejected plans for a permanent travellers site on land between Waste Lane and Old Waste Lane in Balsall Common. The decision not to allow development on green belt land was taken at the recent Cabinet Meeting.
Campaign group RAID (Residents Against Inappropriate Development), originally created to fight against traveller occupation of land in Meriden, was expanded into different branches when proposals were put forward for sites in Balsall Common and Hockley Heath.
A long year of campaigning and negotiations by people from the villages of Meriden, Berkswell and Balsall Common has finally resulted in the partial restoration of a bus link between the three settlements and beyond into Solihull. One year on from the axing of a service that was a lifeblood service for some residents, Centro have made released a vehicle from their ring and ride Taxibus service to operate a permanent fixed route service, to operate on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The number 83 bus will start from Meriden, run through Berkswell, then parts of Balsall Common before heading into Solihull town centre via Catherine de Barnes.

Meriden, which is fast putting down roots as a street protestor’s centre of excellence, played host to a colourful environmental street demonstration on Monday. Residents who are becoming accustomed to the sight of people parading banners and signs down their street thanks to the ongoing bus service and green belt development disputes, enjoyed more of the same this week, this time with the added bonus of a highly talented leaflet wielding house sparrow.
