Balsall Common’s Matt Clinton suffered the frustration of a double puncture, putting paid to his hopes of winning the annual Isle-of-Man End to End cycle race, to finish in 6th place. The predominantly off-road event attracted 1700 riders to the starting line from all over the world. Clinton, riding for Kenilworth-based Mike Vaughan Cycles, went into the race with hopes of bettering his previous year’s 3rd place on a tough day, made harder by increasingly poor weather conditions.
Balsall Common’s Matt Clinton came out on top at windy Wolvey near Lutterworth to win Hinckley CRC’s Challenge Weekend, which combined a 10-mile time-trial on Saturday, followed by a tougher 25-mile course the following day.
Strong winds would be the dominating feature of the weekend, with the 10-miler, a straight ‘out and back’ time-trial to Magna Park roundabout on the A5.
Balsall Common’s Matt Clinton beat off a number of professional cyclists to claim a remarkable 2nd place after an 8-month road racing hiatus to an end at the West Midlands Road Race Championships in Bridgnorth.
The Mike Vaughan Cycles found himself lining up for 5 laps of the 17 mile circuit with several professional riders topping the start-sheet. The 86 mile contest was more than double the length of any races Matt had done this year in his first foray away from time-trial racing for some time.
Balsall Common’s Matt Clinton claimed a brilliant 3rd placed finish behind 2 professional riders when he took part in the National Hill Climb Championships at Whaley Bridge north of Buxton on Sunday 31st October 2011. This extended Matt’s remarkable run in the competition to 5 consecutive podium finishes, including the winners title in 2008.
The man from Balsall Common was the last man to set off in a field of 150 time triallists on a longer (4.4. miles), shallower (3.2%) and warmer ascent than usual riding against a tricky headwind, especially in the final mile.

One outright victory, one joint first and a third placed finish saw Balsall Common’s Matt Clinton complete a tremendous final round of racing last weekend ahead of this weekend’s National Champs on Sunday.
Matt’s final preparations for this weekends big event saw him take in the Yorkshire Road Club 2 stage race on Saturday, just north of Leeds, a race he went into as favourite and eventual clear winner, before meeting with further success against tough competition at Matlock CC’s double-header on Sunday.
