Emma’s Angels to tackle cancer head-on at Race for Life

A few short months ago, Balsall Common’s Emma Maley got the shock of her life as a routine visit to her GP led to the news she had lobular breast cancer. Faced with a drastic 6 month programme of treatment including chemotherapy, a mastectomy, radiotherapy and reconstructive surgery, Emma refused to lie down and raised a team of 30 Balsall Common Mum’s and youngsters to raise funds for Cancer Research UK by taking on tomorrow’s Race for Life event in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Emma’s team set themselves a grand target of £3500 and with the help of Angela Jaynes florists – who put on a raffle and cake sale last week – Emma’s Angels have already raised cash and pledges to the tune of £3750. Emma and team are now looking to push on and obliterate their original target and friends of Balsall Common are invited to support Emma’s Angels by making a pledge at Emma’s Just Giving page:

Third placed Berkswell entertain Birmingham & District League Premier Division Champions Shrewsbury at Meeting House Lane tomorrow with the help of new signing, Pakistan international bowler Tanvir Ahmed. Berkswell skipper and Warwickshire batting legend Dominic Ostler, delighted with last week’s result chasing down a challenging victory total at Walmley, now sees a greater degree of completeness to his squad:

“With our Warwickshire all-rounder Tom Milnes unavailable so far this season, we’ve all felt we’re perhaps a bowler light in the seam bowling department and the arrival of Tanvir gives us a real boost.”

“As reigning Champions we know Shrewsbury will be tough opposition so we’re delighted to have Tanvir on board and a win tomorrow could be huge for us a club.”

Tanvir Ahmed has represented Pakistan in Test Match cricket and One Day Internationals, in a career which has seen him claim over 500 scalps in first-class cricket with his medium-fast bowling.

Both tomorrow’s squads contain a number of current and former professional cricketers, all on show at The Lant on Meeting House Lane in Balsall Common tomorrow from midday. Visitors are welcome on match days free of charge.

Cricket: local derby Away Day for Premier Division Berkswell

Berkswell’s cricketers travel the short distance to Knowle and Dorridge today, for a hotly anticipated derby clash brim-filled with enticing mini-ecounters, hot on the heels of an opening day victory over Walsall in the Birmingham & District League Premier Division.

Berkswell skipper Dominic Ostler’s squad includes two former Knowle & Dorridge players, both ex-County professionals, in the form of Nick James and Jamie Spires, plus Warwickshire Academy star Mark Best, who comes face to face with older Warwickshire-contracted brother Paul.

The Warwickshire connections in this fixture are seemingly endless on both teams, with skipper Ostler also enjoying the luxury of having Warwickshire batsman Tom Lewis in his upper-middle order. Ostler, himself a former Warwickshire legend, carries a strong side, with the only hints of possible weakness residing in a bowling department which could suffer, should any of the Knowle & Dorridge batsmen get well-set. Dominic and team mates are optimistic nonetheless, after a confidence-building victory over a strong Walsall containing rising Pakistani International star Umar Amin.

The fixture takes on particular meaning for Jamie Spires, returning to the club he skippered for five seasons, including a Premier Division title campaign in 2010, the first in K&D’s history.
