Thanks to Doug Macklam of Berkswell & Balsall Common Hockey Club for submitting reports of matches played 15/10/05.

Congratulations from BalsallCom.Com to the Men’s 1st XI on a mammoth 15 goal demolition job!!!

BBBC 1st XI 15 – Malvern 0

Berkswell cruised to their first win of the season in resounding style with a 15-0 trashing of Malvern.

The Malvern goal came under pressure right from the whistle with Balsall taking charge of possession and playing the ball around superbly. It was only a matter of time before the floodgates opened.

Within 15 minutes Berkswell were 3-0 to the good with wonder goals from Dave Haggart, James Bonnel and Rob Whisson.

Berkswell then took their foot of the gas for a period before penetrating the Malvern defence a further three times before half time thanks to efforts from Tom Delaney, Martin Stevens and Simon Tite.

After the interval Berkswell stepped up the pressure and despite not scoring through a packed D for the first 10 minutes of the half more goals were inevitable.

New recruit Joel Marsden stepped up to collect a debut brace, whilst James Bonnel, Martin Stevens and Simon Tite also added further goals to give all 3 a brace each.

Keeping the scoring flowing to the final whistle Duncan Greenshields and Oli Talbot came in on the action.

Chairman Rob Whisson completed his hatrick in his new striking role just before the final whistle blew. Berkswell are very confident going into the next round of matches this weekend.

BBCHC 2nd’s 2 – Yardley 2nd’s 2

BBCHC 3rd XI 13 – Bournville 7

Berkswell Fathoms ran out 13-7 winners in a high-scoring affair against Bourneville, with club Chairman Rob Whisson netting an incredible 9 times.

With both teams only having 9 players, there was much space to exploit and Berkswell took an early 3-0 lead through a quick-fire hatrick from Joel Crouch. Bourneville responded quickly, slotting past debutant ‘keeper Pete Silman and the teams traded goals to end the half 7-4 to Berkswell – Whisson completing his hatrick before half time.

The second half continued with much of the same – Berkswell extending their lead, and then Bourneville pegging them back.

In the end it was Berkswell’s youth and fitness that made the difference as their players broke time and again into space. Whisson completed his double hatrick shortly after half time and continued to score freely, completing his hatrick of hatricks shortly before the final whistle, with captain Oli Talbot converting from the spot after Nick Seagrave had a shot blocked by a foot on the line. All credit to both teams who played attractive attacking hockey in a good-natured spirit.

BBCHC Ladies 2 – Birmingham Wasps 5

Berkswell & Balsall Common Ladies went down 5-2 on Saturday in an evenly matched game against Brimingham Wasps.

Wasps took an early lead from a short-corner and shortly after doubled their lead when a cross-come-shot squeezed past goal keeper Nicky Woodcock.

A one-sided scoreline was in the offing as consistent pressure from Wasps saw them nearly extend their lead, but they were thwarted by solid defending. Berkswell improved as the half wore on and carved out several chances themselves, with the Wasps keeper having to make two sharp saves to maintain their lead, and Berkswell finished the half with a succession of short corners.

Early in the second half Berkswell brought the scoreline to 3-2, with goals from Liz Ness and Ellie Davies, with the teams trading goals. However defensive frailties allowed Wasps to score two further goals whilst Berkswell were unable to convert their chances as the game became stretched, with end to end action. Berkswell can take positives from the game, but need to convert more of their chances.
