New Business Breakfast Club for Balsall Common

Balsall Common’s Business Breakfast Club met for the first time this week, Claire Turner reports on how it went:

The first meeting of the Balsall Common Business Breakfast Club was a great chance for local business owners and sole traders to meet up. Attendees shared information about their business, their local connections, and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of working for yourself. Hot local topics including flight paths and HS2 were also thoroughly dissected.

Guest speaker, Richard Hales, Chair of Kenilworth Chamber of Trade told the group about the Chamber, and the benefits of joining. They organise a few key events a year, as well as having an informal meeting on the third Tuesday of each month. They aim to allow local businesses to support each other. Membership is just £40 per year. They are happy to have Balsall Common businesses join, their website is for more information.
We also found out more about the British Legion and what it can offer local businesses in terms of events, room hire, and functions. They do great breakfasts too!

The next meeting of the Balsall Common Business Breakfast Club will be on Friday 19 September at 7.30 at the British Legion on Station Road.  For more information please contact Jill Bowman or join our new LinkedIn Group

Made in Burton Green

Warwickshire Open Studios marks its 14th Anniversary this year, with a series of events from 28 June to Sunday 13 July, the nearest of which takes place in Burton Green next weekend (from Saturday 28th to Sunday 29th June 2014).  It has grown to become the biggest exhibition of unique and original art and craft with over 320 artists and makers in 144 venues in and around the towns and villages of our leafy county.

From painting to printmaking and photography, there’s lots on offer for every taste and budget. Entry is free to all venues. You can speak to artists and makers to find out more about their craft with many offering demonstrations and workshops.

‘Made in Burton Green 2014’ is a community arts project that celebrates arts and crafts in the local community and showcases the creative talents of residents, with the outdoor exhibits remaining in situ until 13 July.

This year’s event will incorporate an exhibition, a scarecrow competition and yarn-bombing, and visitors can enjoy them all with a short circular walk taking in the Kenilworth Greenway and the National Grid Wood.

The exhibition at Burton Green Village Hall will feature photography, painting, ceramics, jewellery and textiles, with craft demonstrations and opportunities to purchase works and to talk to the artists.

Opening times:

• 2pm to 6pm on Saturday 28th

• 10am to 5pm on Sunday 29th

Refreshments and home-baked cakes will be available, as well as a licenced bar.

The Village Choir will be taking part at 4pm on the Sunday 29th

New this year is the “yarn-bombing” community art project exhibited in the woodland alongside the footpath between Hodgetts Lane and the sub-station gate onto the Greeenway. Also known as “guerrilla knitting”, this is a fast-growing community art form which inspires and delights all those involved and those who come to view it.  Local community groups and schools have also contributed to this community project so come and see what’s going on in the woods!
