Berkswell Cricket Club – formed in 1896 – will witness history today as its’ first women’s cricket team take to the field for the first time at the Club’s Meeting House Lane ground this afternoon (Sunday 26th April 2015).
Since appointing Sarah Ginn as Head of Women’s Cricket over the winter months, the new squad has been preparing enthusiastically indoors and out for today’s historic fixture againt visitors Four Oaks. Sarah Ginn explains:
“ Berkswell’s side carries a mix of youth and experience, including 6 Warwickshire County age group representatives and one mother and daughter combination of Sarah and Hannah Pettigrew.”
Berkswell CC aims to provide cricketing opportunity at all levels and the introduction of competitive women’s and girl’s cricket teams in 2015 represent a significant step in this direction.
Pat Milnes, Chairman of Berkswell Cricket Club, said:
“The challenge we’ve set ourselves as a club is to create a model of sustainable success, starting with opportunities for all, advancement for the best youngsters, with access to top facilities and coaches. The launch of our women’s and girls’ sections for 2015 represents a big step in this direction. Alongside the rapid growth of our youth section this has presented the challenge to examine long-term projects, to find land and fund facilities from which to provide fixtures and training. In the long-run this is all going to be great news for our club and wider community.”
He continued, “It’s thanks to the support of our partners, especially our Main Partners at Tyler Packaging, that we’re in a position to grow and develop our facilities, which should see us catering for all levels of cricketing interest.”
Tyler Packaging, based near Leamington Spa, is a specialist supplier of flexible laminate packaging and has strong ties with the club. Adam Kay, Sales and Technical Director at Tyler Packaging said:
“We’re extremely proud to partner with such a focal point of the local community. The plans that Berkswell have in place are fantastic and we’re keen to offer our support wherever possible. Developing a competitive women’s cricket team is just one part of the club’s drive to create cricketing opportunity for all and something that we’re really keen to watch develop this season.
Berkswell’s side contains some genuine young talent, with captain Sarah Ginn having no hesitation in deploying Warwickshire Under 13 cricketer Isabelle Wong as her opening bowler. Isabelle already also plays for Warwickshire’s Under 15s as well and is also a member of England Women’s Performance Development Programme, for the Top 25 Under 15 English cricketers.
Isabelle also plays alongside Sophie Buckton and Ria Fackrell this afternoon, all of whom are members of Warwickshire’s current Junior Elite Player Programme.
Today’s Midlands Women’s Division 3 fixture is 45 overs per side and gets underway at Berkswell’s Meeting House Lane Ground at The Lant from 1:30pm. Visitors are welcome to come and witness the action.
