Berkswell’s Under 11 cricketers emerged victorious in a thrilling County Final on a hot Edgbaston night against Coventry & North Warwicks to bring home the pairs County Championship Trophy. Losing the toss on the Colts Ground at the home of Warwickshire County Cricket Club, Berkswell’s openers Nic Bland and Ollie Southgate got off to a flyer with a 41 run partnership in their allotted overs.
The game then became more attritional, with pairings Ed MacPherson and Haider Ali-Ehsan accumulating well, Luke Middleton and Jack Cooke batting sensibly, before Warwickshire’s Alfie Blundell and Dan Reidy combined to finish well to post a competittive total of 293 for the loss of only 3 wickets along the way.
The Coventry & North Warwicks reply began steadily against solid if non-threatening bowling, before plotting a course to the relatively commanding position of needing only 17 runs with 4 overs remaining, having lost only 1 wicket, thanks to a superb direct hit in the field from Alfie Blundell.
The game and momentum suddenly turned thanks to a superb catch from Haider Ali-Eshan. A caught-and-bowled for Alfie Blundell, whoh left Coventry needing 19 runs from the las two overs (thanks to run penalties for dismissals), paving the way for a stunning 3-wicket over from Luke Middleton, all bowled. The devastation from Middleton’s previous over meant Alfie Blundell’s final over became something of a profession for an increasingly jubilant Berkswell eight.
Berkswell’s boys capped an evening containing character, collective determination and individual brilliance, with a fantastic after-match celebration at the Saracens Head. The boys got to try out the output from the club sponsors brand new 100% wood-burning pizza oven at the end of a brilliant night.
Berkswell’s jubilant coaching team were as delighted as their charges with their new silverware and coach Paul Wilson did his best to reflect at the end of an eventful night:
“What a fantastic night! The boys emerged as winners by sticking together when the game was drifting away from us, our team work has been outstanding all season. Added to that were some excellent individual performances, but the key was that every player made an important contribution to the victory. This was the sort of game that will remain in the players’ minds for a long time to come. The evening at the Saracen’s Head was a great way to celebrate as players, coaches and families reflected on a deserved success, between mouthfuls of tasty pizza.”
A great deal of praise for Berkswell’s Under 11s success has been heaped by Youth Chairman Richard Blundell on the tireless work delivered for Berkswell by cricket consultancy Complete Cricket:
“Jamie Spires at Complete Cricket has done an incredible job co-ordinating our coaching sessions and helping us deal with our own coaching shortages caused by the success of so many of our sides who keep progressing onwards through so many competitions. We have to give an enormous amount of credit to Complete Cricket for our successes so far this season, they’ve been a great addition to our team of dedicated parents, administrators and volunteer coaches. This has been a real team effort on and off the field of play. On a personal level I couldn’t be any more proud.”
