Trevor Jordan reports on a weekend which saw Berkswell’s Tyler Packaging 1st XI make up ground on the title chasing pack and Berkswell paceman Dave Brignull pick up a worthy Saracens Head Man of the Match Award as a vital cog in a highly efficient 4-man seam attack.

Birmingham & District League – Premier Division

Berkswell 112/4 v Walmley 108ao

Another disciplined bowling display followed by a robust batting performance ensured a valuable win for Berkswell and enabled them to make up ground on the clubs above them in the league.

Winning the toss home skipper Dominic Ostler asked the visitors to bat and they quickly lost wickets with Warwickshire’s Tom Milnes, bowling with great pace, picking up two wickets in consecutive deliveries, trapping both Carlos Prowse (8) and Peter McKay (0) lbw with the score on 23. Walmley lost their third wicket in the next over when Chris Cheslin bowled Bavik Patel (13) for the addition of only four runs.

Mo Sheikh and Chris Whittock put together a forty four run partnership in 13 overs but the partnership was broken when Whittock (20) was also adjudged lbw to Imran Arif. Dave Brignull soon made it five wickets down with the scoreboard still showing 71 when he had Sheikh (21) caught behind by Phil Neale, and the visitors to Meeting House Lane were in more trouble six runs later as their sixth wicket went down with Brignull bowling Andrew Hendry (5). At 96 Walmley lost two further wickets Shozair Ali (7) bowled by Arif, and Adam Breakspear (13) being caught at slip by Ostler again off the bowling of Brignull. The Walmley tail offered little resistance and the remaining two wickets were taken when Arif had Jonathan Newis (3) given out lbw and Brignull bowled Paul Griffiths (8) to leave the visitors all out for 108 in the 36th over. Dave Brignull 4 for 29 and Imran Arif 3 for 23 were the pick of the Berkswell bowlers.

The Berkswell openers James and Phil Neale had little difficulty in getting the scoreboard ticking over and had accumulated 56 runs by the 16th over when Phil Neale (33) was bowled by Newis. Tom Lewis and James Neale then moved the score on to 93 when Lewis (22) overbalanced in the crease and was stumped by Hendry to give Newis a second wicket. Tom Milnes (5) lost his wicket to Newis with the score on 99 and at 107 Dominic Ostler (6) also fell victim to Newis (4-39). It was left to Chris Cheslin (5 not out) to hit the winning runs and see Berkswell through to an impressive victory. James Neale remained undefeated on 35.

An elated Dominic Ostler said: “ We performed magnificently again today and with results elsewhere going in our favour we are now right back in the mix with the sides just above us. Next week we go to Kidderminster who are twenty one points above us in third place, so a good result for us there will put us in a strong position in our challenge for the league title.”

Berkswell’s Tyler Packaging Ltd 1st XI travel to Kidderminster Victoria on Saturday 22nd June in a game which gets underway at midday.
