The Brickmakers Arms on Station Road in Balsall Common is the long running venue for the Round Table’s regular monthly quiz, the next of which takes place tomorrow (Wednesday 31st August) from 8pm. These popular quiz nights have been a popular staple at the venue on the last Wednesday of every month for a number of years and continue to draw an enthusiastic audience.

Obituary: Michael Chattaway
Michael Chattaway, one of the best known servants of village life in Balsall Common, passed away on Saturday (27th August 2011), aged 74. Mick was best known to many for his Alladdin’s cave of a hardware shop, which carried his family name on Station Road from 1931, until it closed in 2007.

Cricket: Berkswell claim victory in local derby to maintain pole position
Cricket correspondent Trevor Jordan explains how Berkswell miraculously turned the outcome of a rain affected game from almost certain draw to last gasp victory with a flurry of wickets in front of exuberant home supporters with only balls to spare:

A superb spell of spin bowling by Babar Khan kept Berkswell at the top of the of a closely fought league in what eventually turned out to be outstanding 146 run demolition of near neighbours Coventry & North Warwicks in a rain interrupted game. In a victory that was much tougher to acquire than the scoreline suggests due to rain, an enthusiastic Meeting House Lane crowd cheered Berkswell to an improbable victory as Babar Khan took a stream of increasingly frequent wickets, including a last-gasp hat-trick to claim victory with just eight balls of the game remaining.
