Rugby: Berkswell suffer defeat at hands of Bedworth

Steve Wake reports on Berkswell’s Midlands West 2 (South) trip to Bedworth on Saturday 22nd January:

Bedworth – 48     Berkswell & Balsall – 13

Bedworth handed out a lesson in finishing and three-quarter play, to an unusually disorganized Berkswell side. What had been a relatively close game up until the 35th minute suddenly became a rout, as the home side scored two converted tries in the minutes before halftime; turning a 12-6 advantage into 26-6 at the break.

The visiting forwards kept the home pack under pressure for the whole game, but Bedworth’s three-quarters – prompted by an excellent display from their Fly-Half – ran amok with seven tries to Berkswell’s one. After last week’s solid performance, it was an out of character performance from B’s usually strong defence.

The first scrum saw the visitors shunt the home pack off the ball, securing good possession and giving no hint of what was to be a torrid afternoon for B’s. However the Bedworth pack soon learned to get their ball out quickly, where fast hands and an astute kicking display from their Outside Half set-up the platform for success. After eight minutes Bedworth had scored their first try, which was converted and after fifteen minutes a second, unconverted effort, gave them a 12-0 advantage.

Berkswell used their front-eight advantage to regularly move the ball into Bedworth territory, but their only rewards were penalty kicks, as the home pack had to stop the forward momentum illegally. Two resultant Sam Bignall penalties reduced the home lead to 12-6 as the game came towards the end of the first half. Bedworth were still dominating things in the backs though and two converted tries in three minutes, the second deep in first-half injury time, changed the score-line and complexion of the match completely – Bedworth holding a 26-6 advantage at half-time.

The second half started with a period of pressure on the Bedworth line, but the visitors couldn’t find a way through. A penalty to Bedworth on 51 minutes extended their advantage further and a try after 64 minutes augmented the lead to 34-8. After this a quiet period of play saw few chances to either side, as Bedworth held the upper hand without much sign of an unlikely Berkswell comeback.

Three tries in the final eight minutes saw firstly Bedworth increase their lead with a converted try, after a move across their three-quarters, which took the ball from one side of the field to the other. Then Berkswell at last got a consolation try; but in keeping with their afternoon, it was a penalty-try after Bedworth had to pull down a scrum near their try-line which was heading for a push-over try. Sam Bignall kicked the conversion from in front of the posts. It was Bedworth who fittingly had the final say however, with another converted try in the final minute.
