Rugby: Berkswell return from 3 week winter freeze

Steve Wake reports on Berkswell’s narrow defeat in their Midlands West Division 2 clash at Old Coventrians last Saturday (11th December 2010):

Old Coventrians – 27 Berkswell & Balsall – 21
Midlands West 2 (South)

In their first league match for three weeks, following a sequence of postponements caused by the early-winter freeze up, Berkswell staged a late fight-back at Old Coventrians, claiming a welcome bonus point and almost the match. The B’s had been forced to field a very ‘experienced’ back division and, although pinned back in their own half for long periods of the match, they were strong in the tackle and always looking to run the ball out of trouble. OC’s were certainly on top in the first half, but were only eleven points clear at the turn-around. The visiting forwards ground down their opposite numbers and provided the platform for the late surge of ten unanswered points in the final 15 minutes that had their hosts desperate to hear the final whistle.

Hockey: Berkswell resume league success after icy vigil

Berkswell's 1st XI - picked up from where they left off

Report on Berkswell’s return from Iceland, from our man on the ground, Doug Macklam:
Mens 1st XI
Derby Asterdale 0 v BBCHC 7 (Oliver Stuart-Smith 4, Martin Cross 2, Andy Livingstone)

With captain Martin Stevens absent, it fell to vice captain Doug Macklam’s task to lead out Berkswell’s defence of top spot and their undefeated league record in East Midlands Division 2 after a three week break enforced by snow and frozen pitches! The team needed little rousing, given the side’s passionate focus for maintaining their rarefied position and went into the game un-phased by changes to the usual line up including Tom Ranner drafted in to support Simon Tite in central midfield and Martin Cross filling in at left half.

Berkswell had Asterdale pinned in their own 25m right from the start, successfully intercepting all their attempts to escape the danger area, such that it was only a matter of time before Oli Stuart-Smith opened his account, hammering the ball from the top of the D into the bottom corner. The second soon followed as Stuart-Smith slipped the ball to the left for Martin Cross to undercut the ball into the opposite top corner, whilst leaving defenders mesmerised, goalkeeper flailing and entire defence mesmerised and awestruck at the pin point accuracy and power of shot.

Coventry City Council unanimously oppose HS2

STOPHS2 Campaign Director Joe Rukin reports:
Coventry City Council voted unanimously to oppose the Government’s high speed rail plans known as HS2 at a meeting last week (Tuesday 7th December), making it the first council in the country not directly affected by the location of the line to take a position against the plans.

Councillors took little time to come to their decision, with cross-party co-operation meaning the ruling Labour group, along with Liberal Democrat and Socialist Councillors accepted the motion proposed by the Conservative opposition. Councillors determined that HS2 would disbenefit Coventry and other areas economically and would see investment taken away from other transport projects. They also warned that HS2 could see the filling in of the green belt, between Coventry and Kenilworth, or even the ‘Meriden Gap’, separating Coventry and Birmingham.
