Hockey: Berkswell’s demolition derby day in Long Buckby

Doug Macklam reports on a full-house of weekend triumphs for Berkswell’s rampaging hockey section, with four wins from four matches:

Mens 1st XI
Long Buckby 0 – BBCHC 14
Berkswell scorers: Oliver Stuart-Smith 6, Robby Wells 2, Andy Livingstone 2, Rob Whisson 2, Martin Stevens, Simon Tite

Stop Press! Livingstone scores, not once but twice! [Unbelievable scenes apparently – Ed]

League leaders Berkswell and Balsall Common travelled to Long Buckby for a late afternoon match hoping for a good win to set them up for the club social that night.  However it was a slow start from the visitors and it was Buckby who almost took the lead in the early exchanges. But the Berkswell defence of Rich Haines, Dom Herring, Doug Macklam, Martin Cross and the returning Nick Turner stood firm at the back and allowed keeper Steve Cross a lazy game in which he didn’t touch the ball!

Berkswell gradually began to improve and the deadlock was finally broken with a couple of scrappy goals from league top scorer Oliver Stuart-Smith. Captain Martin Stevens extended the scoreline finishing off a well worked penalty corner routine and another goal from Stuart-Smith took the teams into half time at 4-0 to the visitors.

As the home team tired, Berkswell upped their game in the second half with the midfield of Robby Wells, Simon Tite, Stevens and Rob Whisson pushing forwards and creating chances for Andy Livingstone and Stuart-Smith up front. Eventually

the pressure proved too much and the goals began to flow despite a brave performance from the Buckby keeper. After much taunting for his recent lack of goals Livingstone bagged himself a brace and a good telling off some naughty backchat to the umpire. Stuart-Smith helped himself another double hat-trick with Robby Wells (2), Rob Whisson (2), Simon Tite and Martin Stevens helping complete the 14-0 scoreline.

The highlight of the game was saved until the end where Tite thought he’d scored with an exquisite lob only for Stuart-Smith to decide that the best way to remain at the top of the scoring charts was to deflect goal bound shots from his team-mates wide of the post.

Mens 2nd XI

BBCHC 3 (Michael Lister 2, James Boreham) – Kingswinford 0

The 2nd XI found themselves up against a skillford Kingswinford side this week. Play was competitive with both teams having chances and winning a number of penalty corners. Man of the match Matthew Roebuck had a suburb early shot tipped wide by the visitor’s keeper and countless other strikes flew just wide of the posts. After 62 minutes of goalless action both teams were starting to feel the pressure, but Berkswell stepped up and centre forward Michael Lister claimed two from open play within a matter of minutes. With seconds to spare Berkswell put their new penalty corner routine into action allowing James Boreham’s powerful, precision strike to find the bottom left corner. Moments later the final whistle sounded marking Berkswell’s 6th consecutive victory.
