A good news story from a few weeks ago …
Steve Wake reports:
The clubhouse and bar were a vision in pink, and alive with feminine chatter … hardly an an admission Berkswell and Balsall Rugby Club (BBRFC) would normally be happy to make … as the players carried out their normal Saturday afternoon masculine mayhem on the nearby pitch.
But this time the cause of the contrast between macho and female activities taking place side-by-side on the afternoon of a home match was more than justified by the outcome…a cheque for £1,400 raised in aid of Breast Cancer Research !
This handy sum, which included the proceeds of a raffle, was the outcome of BBRFC’s inaugural Ladies Day, now intended to be an annual fund-raiser. And so, for such a worthwhile initiative, the players not only turned a blind eye to all the pink in the pavilion but, along with the referee, they battled away in the rain outside wearing…pink socks !.
“It must have a little unusual for the players arriving to play rugby and seeing pink balloons at the entrance to the clubhouse and the pink theme inside that we had requested of our diners ,” said one of the organising committee. “But they took it in the spirit of the occasion. And we’re indebted also to local businesses and individuals for donating some fantastic raffle prizes.”
Such was the response to the BBRFC Ladies Day that 85 pink-clad ladies enjoyed a three-course lunch accompanied by music by a saxophonist and tea and cakes later. “One of our lady members is currently being treated for cancer,” a committee member added “And, let’s face it, very few families escape from the awful illness entirely.” The rugby club are to be complimented for ‘turning pink’ in this way for a very worthwhile cause and an enjoyable afternoon.”
Rugby Note: BBRFC won their game against Spartans….and added to the party atmosphere with a suitable sing-song afterwards.
