Matt Clinton finished as runner up in today’s National Hill Climb at Dover’s Hill, Gloucestershire for the second year running, 6 seconds behind a successful defending Champion Dan Fleeman (Raleigh UCI team). 25 year old 2008 Champion Clinton (Mike Vaughan Bikes, Kenilworth) had to wait nervously at the finish line, having occupied top spot right until the end when last man Fleeman flew up the hill to take the title.

Former Berkswell girl Ivy Smith hits the Big 100
Entertainers were on the scene at the Knowles Care Home in Coventry as former Berkswell resident Ivy Smith celebrated her 100th birthday two weeks ago (Sunday 17th October 2010). Ivy grew up in Berkswell and her mother worked at Berkswell Hall, a Grade II listed building recently converted into apartment flats, and once home to the founders of Berkswell Cricket Club.

Cycling: Matt Clinton aims for honours at National Hill Climb Championship
Balsall Common’s Matt Clinton will be hoping he can go one better than last year as he takes on defending champion Dan Fleeman at the RTTC National Hill Climb Championship title tomorrow (Sunday 31st October). Last year’s runner up Clinton knows he’ll have his work cut out as he tackles the brutal Dover’s Hill in Gloucestershire against an array of tough competitors including former Champion James Dobbin and this year’s Catford Hill Climb winner Robert Gough.

Village Christmas Card Shop to raise funds for charity

Popular local comedian Malcolm Stent visited Balsall Common Library earlier this week to officially open this year’s Charity Christmas card shop.
The festive greetings cards, which are sold in aid of 16 charities including Birmingham Childrens Hospital and Cancer Research UK as well as some smaller local organisations, are available at the library on the Kenilworth Road priced from just £2.95 for a pack of 20.
Heart of England’s Susan Izon nominated for West Mids award

Rugby: Berkswell suffer reverse at hands of Pershore
Rugby: Steve Wake reports on Berkswell & Balsall’s reverse in their Midlands West Division 2 (South) encounter played 23rd October 2010:
Pershore – 36 Berkswell & Balsall – 24
Another league reverse for Berkswell and another game in which they struggled to turn territorial dominance into victory. With several players unavailable, B’s were forced to make six changes from last week’s winning side. Mistakes behind the scrum gifted Pershore two of their tries after a promising start from the visitors had seen them lead 10-0. Five unanswered home tries in the middle of the match saw Pershore turn the game around and lead 31-10, before Berkswell came back with two tries in the final quarter.
High Speed 2: Action Group to start fighting fund at exhibition
An action group made up of local of residents say the proposed London to Birmingham ‘High Speed 2′ Rail Link will not only decimate Green Belt land and wreak havoc on the local way of life, but cannot be justified on economic grounds either. The Heart of England High-Speed Railway Action Group is about to launch a campaign fighting fund and has invited groups for and against the proposals to speak at a public fundraising and awareness meeting this Saturday at the Jubilee Centre on Station Road in Balsall Common (30th Octboer).
