Hockey: Berkswell & Balsall recruiting for new season

Berkswell and Balsall Hockey Club is getting warmed up for the new season and the increasingly successful club is looking for players of all abilities to complement their existing squads. Training has just got underway and the newly promoted Men’s first team play their first friendly today as they build towards their West Midlands Division 1 season opener against Atherston Adders at Westwood Astros on Saturday 2nd October.

Club Chairman Doug Macklam says,

“Berkswell and Balsall Common Hockey Club has firmly established itself as a club committed to providing hockey for people of all ages and abilities in an environment where everyone can have fun. The Club has evolved continually over the past 10 years, introducing new teams and formal training sessions. Last season was the most successful season in the club’s history with the 1st XI men securing promotion into West Midland Division 1 and the successful launch of a men’s 3rd XI.”

The club is keen to stress to prospective members looking for enjoyment should not be put off by increasing success on the pitch, as they’d be joining a club equally committed to the fun side of life and opportunities for all, with a friendly atmosphere and strong social scene running throughout, amply demonstrated by the way prospective players are welcomed into training sessions, even when they turn up unannounced out of the blue.

Anyone looking to get involved may be be surprised to learn that despite its’ origins in Balsall Common, the club is no longer based within the Berkswell and Balsall boundaries, having been forced to move further afield when new regulations making match play on artificial grass compulsory, meant a move to nearby Westwood for match day and training facilities. Doug explains,

“These days the Club runs training sessions at Warwick University Astros on Wednesday evenings from 8-9:30pm where anyone is welcome to come along, meet us and see what we’re about.”
