CraigyB writes,

“Shoaib Akhtar, widely lauded as the fastest bowler in world cricket is on his way to Balsall Common to play cricket for Berkswell Cricket Club.

The 30 year old Pakistani pace bowling legend is undergoing rehabilitation following a stress fracture to his ankle. The injury, which has kept him out of competitive cricket for approximately 5 to 6 months has meant Pakistan needed to devise an imaginative plan to get him fit enough to take part in the 4th and final Test for Pakistan against England at the Oval in August.

25/07/06 – Cricket: Berkswell’s victory spree ends in tame fashion

CraigyB writes,

“Berkswell’s run of four consecutive wins ended when they clung on desperately for a losing draw in a rain affected contest at Whitchurch on Saturday.

Berkswell’s stand-in skipper Paul Vickerstaff won the toss and invited Whitchurch to bat. Steady bowling from the Berkswell attack ensured Whitchurch were kept to 146 for 2 from the first 40 overs, but the score was virtually doubled when another 145 runs from the last 15 overs took the total to 291 for 3 thanks to a masterly 195 not out from overseas professional Mas Hasnain. The only Berkswell bowlers to claim any wickets were Keir Threlkeld (2 for 86) and Dave Brignull (1 for 59).

21/07/06 – Cricket: Berkswell make it 4 wins in a row

CraigyB writes,

Saturday 15th July 2006
Berkswell 211 for 7 wickets (20pts) beat Wombourne 207 all out (6pts) by 3 wickets

Berkswell commenced the second half of their Birmingham League campaign with a crucial hard fought victory at home against Wombourne – the only side to have comprehensively outplayed them in the first half of the season.

Berkswell skipper Dominic Ostler won the toss and despite missing injured bowlers Dave Brignull and Patrick Milnes bravely opted to bowl first. His decision soon paid dividends when Sully Khan struck twice in the first over of the day to remove Tomkins (0) and Hughes (4). At the other end Keir Threlkeld showed his consistency yet again with a tight opening spell which claimed a further 3 wickets to reduce Wombourne to a shaky looking 40 for 5 from 12 overs.

CraigyB writes,

Sat 8th July 2006
Berkswell CC 204 for 7 wickets (20pts) beat Beacon 203 for 7 (6pts) by 3 wickets

Berkswell entertained Staffordshire side Beacon on Saturday and on a day when Berkswell’s 17 year old Josh Audi enjoyed his first team bowling debut ran out winners in a close fought contest.

Despite regular opening strike bowler Dave Brignull being missing through injury Berkswell skipper Dominic Ostler felt sufficiently confident to have a bowl when he won the toss. His makeshift opening strike force of Keir Threlkeld (3 for 24 from 10 overs) and regular opener Sully Khan repaid the faith bowling unchanged for the first 20 overs with some tight bowling. Patrick Milnes joined Sully Khan to maintain the strnaglehold and Khan was unlucky not to finish with better figures when his marathon 20 over spell ended with a return of 1 for 62.
