“Matt Nightingale reports on Berkswell’s Saturday 1st XI’s first taste of defeat this season against neighbours Coleshill:
Sat 10th June 2006
Coleshill 184 for 4 (24pts) beat Berkswell 183 all out (3pts) by 6 Wickets
Berkswell suffered defeat for the first time this season in The Birmingham League on a poor track at near neighbours Coleshill.
Having won the toss and electing to bat first, The Berkswell openers put together a stand of 40, before losing left-hander Giles Clements for 26. Paul Vickerstaff soon followed for a duck, before Mohammed Akhlaq and skipper Dominic Ostler came together in a hard worked partnership of 57.
The introduction of Lee Craig accounted for Akhlaq in his first over for 41, and Dominic Ostler soon followed for 44, bowled by Lee Bird. Richard Blundell went for a duck, before all rounder Keir Threlkeld was unluckily run out for 17. Matt Nightingale (12), Dave Brignull (14) and Sully Khan 13 not out, helped raise the total to a below par 183 all out in 55 overs.
Coleshill went aggressively after the total despite losing Poulton for 4 in Dave Brignull’s fourth over, as his opening partner Marawat hit 4 fours and a six in his 29, before being caught by Ostler off Sully Khan. McDonald was bowled by Pat Milnes for 17.
This opened the door for the decisive partnership of the game with Zaheer Suliman (57no) and former Berkswell batsman Nadeem Bhatti (45) compiling runs at such an impressive rate that the victory target was achieved with 20 overs to spare.
3rd place Berkswell are on their travels again next week with a visit to Redditch as they seek to keep pressure on top teams St Georges and Whitchurch.
