Matt Nightingale reports on Berkswell’s first success since their promotion to the Birmingham and District Premier League …
“A fine win and 24 points for Berkswell on their home debut in Birmingham League Division 3 against Whitchurch.
Having lost the toss and being asked to bat first Berkswell found runs hard to come by in damp conditions that strongly favoured ball over bat.
Captain Dominic Ostler was the only batsman to produce an innings of any authority compiling 40 and with wickets falling consistently the rest of the order battled hard to chip in with vital runs.
[Berkswell skipper Dominic Ostler top scored with 40]
Berkswell were finally bowled out in the 53rd over for 155, with Hasnain the most successful of the Whitchurch bowlers with figures of 4 for 24 from 13 overs.
Following a short break for rain Whitchurch found themselves with 46 overs in which to chase their target but Berkswell’s Kier Threlkeld produced an unbroken spell of 6 wickets for 22 to destroy any hopes the Shropshire side had of reaching their target.
Threlkeld was ably supported by Sultan Khan (2 for 19) and Paul Vickerstaff (2 for 12) as Whitchurch collapsed to 58 all out.
Next week Berkswell are home to Kings Heath where they will be looking to improve their current league position of 4th. The game at The Lant, Meeting House Lane, Balsall Common commences at 1.00pm.”
