21/04/06 – Berkswell cricketer makes surprise Warwickshire debut

Berkswell Cricket Club’s young wicketkeeper/batsman ‘Freddie’ Klokker made an unexpected but successful debut for Warwickshire in the Liverpool Victoria County Championship at Hove against Sussex this week.

Klokker (23), harbouring ambitions of playing regular first-class cricket, took 3 catches and scored 40 runs as ‘nightwatchman’ to help Warwickshire build a substantial first innings lead and take control of their vital opening clash of the season.

Freddie’s surprise inclusion came following pre-season injuries sustained by Warwickshire’s contracted keeper’s Tim Ambrose and Tony Frost and was a surprise even to him.

Having been invited to travel with the squad as contingency cover, Freddie didn’t know he was playing until 30 minutes before play after the first choice men had failed to come through their morning drills.

Freddie is thrilled with how things have turned out, especially given the career threatening eye injury sustained at the beginning of last season where a blow playing for MCC Young Cricketers left him blind in one eye.
