14/03/06 – Hockey men boost goal difference by 13 goals

Doug Macklam reports on Berkswell & Balsall Common Hockey Club matches played 11/03/2006:

Mens 1st XI
BBCHC 13 (Simon Tite 5, Robin Pick 2, Martin Stevens, Duncan Greenshields, Andy Livingstone, Oliver Talbot, Steve Graham, James Bonell)
Aston University 0

Berkswell got a much needed goal difference boost that could be a crucial promotion decider leading into the final games of the season.

Berkswell menaced Aston University from the off knocking in a quick fire 7 goals in the first 25 minutes including 5 from Simon Tite, the second of which was a stunner that cannoned in off the cross bar. Duncan Greenshields deflected one of Tite’s shots to claim the 6th and Andy Livingstone the 7th, before Berkswell sat back and cantered into the second half comfortably 7-0 in the lead. Despite Tite having to leave Berkswell kept up the pressure with Tite’s replacement Robin Pick picking up 2 and Martin Stevens, Oliver Talbot, Steve Graham and James Bonell grabbing one a piece. Berkswell face a tough double header on Saturday and Sunday but will be going into the game with renewed confidence and vigour.

Ladies 1st XI
BBCBC 1 (Ellie Davis)
Sutton Coldfield 2

In an end to end game Sutton struck twice in the first half from breaking runs. The midfield for both teams worked hard to keep the pressure on with runs up both the left and right wings. Berkswell were unlucky not a get a flick after the Sutton keeper obstructed the ball from the attackers. Shortly into the second half Liz Ness was denied a goal by a fine diving save by Sutton’s keeper. However consistent pressure paid off for Berkswell when a well worked short corner routine from Kate Tyler allowed Ellie Davis to score. Later in the game captain Kate Tyler was unlucky not to convert a penalty flick after Ellie Davis was brought down by the keeper in the D. Sutton kept attacking but hard work from the Berkswell back three kept them at bay. There were no more goals in the second but Kate Stanley and Lisa Yates had chances for the villagers. All in all it was an exciting end to end game with both teams playing well.

09/03/06 – Birmingham Airport to get 10 mile long runway

CraigyB writes,

The main reason for the Birmingham Airport expansion plans is Iranian pilots.

You see, Iranian pilots, accustomed as they are to landing more or less anywhere, for example in amongst fields of sheep and stuff, have caused a major government rethink after one of their pilots tried to land a 200-plus seater Boeing in a field near Fen End.
