25/02/06 – Hockey men slide to 4 points off lead with unlucky draw

Doug Macklam reports on matches played by Berkswell & Balsall Common Hockey Club on 18/02/2006:

Mens 1st XI
Pershore 3 v Berkswell & Balsall Common 3 (James Bonell 2, Tom Delaney 1)

Berkswell failed to capitalise on a dominant performance and slipped further from promotion contention and now lie 4 points behind the leading pair.

The first period of play saw Berkswell keeping play in the opposition half with Pershore only able to muster occasional breaks into Berkswell territory. Berkswell went close through Rob Whisson and Si Tite before James Bonell was awarded a penalty flick for skull-duggery in the opposition D.

A fantastic save from the Pershore ‘keeper kept them in the game and Pershore swept forward winning a series of penalty corners at the other end. The Berkswell defence eventually bowed against the run of play and Pershore took a 1-0 lead.

Berkswell fought back dominating the rest of the half, James Bonell drawing another penalty flick for a similar intentional foul. This time he made no mistake and Berkswell drew level.

Minutes later Bonell found himself at the top of the D and struck superbly into the top corner to give Berkswell the advantage. Shortly before half time Tom Delaney skilfully deflected a free hit from Doug Macklam round the stranded Pershore ‘keeper to give Berkswell a 3-1 advantage at the break.

Still dominating the second half Berkswell went close several times through Duncan Greenshields, Martin Stevens, Andy Livingstone, Simon Tite and Rob Whisson. Unfortunately the pressure failed to produce the necessary goals and Pershore hit back through a short corner.

With five minutes to go Pershore launched the ball through Doug Macklam into the D and the defence didn’t have time to control the ball before Pershore latched onto to a decisive equaliser.

Mens 2nd XI
BBCHC v Aldridge (postponed)

Mens 3rd XI
BBCHC 2 (Guy Wilkes, Tom Ranner) v Hampton 4th XI 1

Berkswell 3’s gave an assured performance to run out 2-1 winners against an experienced Hampton XI. A tight first half saw play fluctuate in both directions however the advantage was given to Berkswell after a goal mouth scramble was eventually converted by Guy Wilkes.

In the second half strong midfield link up play between Nick Herring and Tom Gray lead to an opportunity for Tom Ranner wide of the right hand post. Tom calmly flicked the deflection in off the keepers pads to give Berkswell a 2-0 lead. With 15 minutes to go Hampton pulled a goal back but fine saves from Rob Senior kept further Hampton attacks from going in. In the final minutes Hampton looked to have equalised but the short corner strike was adjudged to have been higher than the back board and was therefore disallowed leaving Berkswell 2-1 victors.
