13/10/05 – Hockey – Balsall & Berkswell season underway

Hockey match reports from Berkswell & Balsall Common Hockey Club from 08/10/2005:

Mens 1st XI
Kynoch 4 BBCHC 3

A tightly contested game saw Berkswell lose out to a highly contentious last minute goal from Kynoch. Going down a goal after an even first 25 minutes Berkswell went into the second half trailing but by no means out of the game.

In a frenetic 2nd half opening Berkswell managed to claw back two goals to take the lead. The first of these arose through some scavenging in amongst the opposition defence by Mike Horsewill who created the opening for a superb strike by Pete Wright.

Kynoch’s predictable long ball game finally paid dividends for them, drawing level and then taking the lead. Almost as soon as this happened Alan Cole fired a superb shot home from the top of the D, so thunderous it broke the backboard of the goal. As the last minutes drew close Kynoch fired a shot well wide of the far post but was deflected in off a Kynoch foot that was not seen by the umpire, leaving the Berkswell men feeling distinctly hard done by at the final whistle. That said, the BBCHC preformance was superb and there is plenty of confidence going into the rest of the season.

Mens 2nd XI
BBCHC 3 – Stafford 2nd’s 2

Balsall’s 2nd XI kicked off the home season with a great 3-2 win against Stafford. Berkswell largely controlled the game and fought well but couldn?t find a breakthrough until 25mins into the first half when Captain James Hornby scored from a well executed short corner. The game remained under Berkswell?s control when a goal was added by Chris Gallon, again from a short corner. Oliver Mumby capped the performance off with a solid strike into the goal. However, a lack of concentration towards the end of the match let Stafford score twice in quick succession but Berkswell held out to the final whistle.

Mens 3rd XI
Old Sillhillians 1 – BBCHC 3

Another fine start to Berkswells season. The first goal was superbly taken by captain Dan McCarthy while new recruit Joel netted a second from a tight angle on the right. The third was expertly scored, roofed into the top corner, by another new recruit JJ Outram. Both teams played the game in a really good spirit and it was a perfect way to start the new season with all players making good contributions right through the match.
