15/02/05 – Hockey – Men Draw, Ladies Lose

Doug Macklam, Berkswell & Balsall Hockey club captain reports on matches played 12/03/05:

Mens 1st Team
Kynoch 3
Berkswell & Balsall Common 3

In a continuing late ascent of the league table, Berkswell came away with a well deserved point and were unlucky not to get the full three. Despite going down to an early Kynoch goal from some somewhat dubious marking in defence Berkswell continued to push the home team, pinning them in thier own half. The pressure saw two goals come
before the half time break from Darren Kirby and Martin Stevens.

Just before the half time whistle Kynoch were allowed to claw another goal back through a penalty corner. After half time Kynoch were able again to take the initiative forcing themselves into the lead, 3-2, from some more sloppy marking in defence. Man of the match Darren Kirby was a continual threat to the Kynoch goal, going close in hitting the crossbar before eventually lobbing the keeper from wide left to claim a second goal and securing the equaliser. Despite going down to 10
men in the last minutes Berkswell continued to pressure the Kynoch goal, however they could find no way through leaving the scoreline at 3-3.

Mens 2nd Team
Berkswell & Balsall Common 7
Evesham 3

After kindly loaning Evesham a goalkeeper the game got underway with Berkswell firmly in control of the first half. Continued pressure of the Evesham goal brought 6 goals before the half-time whistle with only one in relpy from Evesham. In on the goal action was Chris Gallen, Oli Talbot, Oli Mumby, Ben Mould with 2 and man of the match,
nine year old Cameron Nunn with one just before half time. After the break Berkswell began to easeoff the throttle allowing Evesham to score two goals, however Ben Mould was able to complete his hatrick before the end of the game. A very promising performance from the Mens 2nd team with the possibility of a league placing next season.

Ladies 1st Team
Berkswell & Balsall Common 1
Olton & West Warwick 3

The first half saw an evenly matched game with good attacking moves by Olton matched by some strong defensive work from Berkswell’s midfield
and defence. Despite pressure at both ends the score was 0-0 at half time.

The second half saw more excitement as Olton took the lead. This was matched later by a right post goal from Lisa Yates after a run by Kate Tyler. Unfortunately Berkswell conceded two goals from stray breaks which left them with a 3-1 defeat which did not reflect the closeness of the match.
