14/12/04 – Berkswell & Balsall Rugby Club U17s

Earlsdon 0 – BBRFC 14

The start of the return fixtures on a miserable wet dreary day but good rugby conditions.

Good to see the return of Adam Dennis, Nick Waite and James Munday back from injuries but unfortunate to hear that Matt Reid will be out for a number of weeks.

The game started with a lot of pressure in Earlsdon half, good defensive play by Bs but they never looked switched on for most of the first half. B’s Adam Dennis managed to hold up an Earlsdon try in the 16th minute. The game turned into football in the 25th minute when James Bridge kicked the ball down the field from the half way line and successfully dived on it resulting in Bs first try and a conversion by Andrew Buck.

A good team talk at half time created a better 2nd half. Bs stepped up the pressure and dominated the game, Earlsdon defended hard. Andrew Buck had a chance and went diving for the try line but it was disallowed because it was a double move! With 10 minutes to go Karl Parker scored from a brave charge forward right alongside the post and Andrew Buck converted it.

BBRFC 23 – Old Leams 13

We were expecting this to be a tough game but we needed to win! There were still injuries in the squad but we still fielded 16 players. It is a long wait until the day when all the team are fit and available!

The conditions were perfect for the players with the ground very soft, bright and mild for the spectators but very muddy.

B’s started with intense defending as Old Leam’s put pressure on instantly although B’s managed to turn it around and fight back resulting in the first points of the match in the eighth minute with B’s Matt Reid storming through OL’s defence, scoring in the corner for his first try of the season but B’s didn’t manage to convert it.

Later, a penalty was awarded to OL’s and M Foley kicked through the posts giving OLs three points. Five minutes later B’s were awarded a penalty and Steve Allen under pressure successfully scored a further 3 points for B’s, extending their lead. B’s looked the stronger side as time went on, but just before half time Leam’s came back with a supreme break away try from B Burrows and a conversion from M Foley. This piled on the pressure for B’s especially knowing that at half time they were losing and realised they had to up the tempo in the second half if they wanted to get anything out of the game.

A penalty was awarded to Old Leam’s and M Foley successfully kicked it, giving OL’s a further three points. B’s stacked up the pressure even more and was close to the try line, good defensive play from OL’s made it hard for B’s but Andrew Buck forced his way through to score, unfortunately the conversion was wide. A front row OL’s player was sin binned resulting in passive scrums for the next ten minutes.

A replica try came from Andrew Buck in the 63rd minute when he crashed through OL’s defence in the left hand corner, with his extreme strength, and assistance from Dewar; the conversion was unsuccessful. B’s final try came from a magnificent run from Matt Reid off-loading from player to player, finally out to the backs with an impressive move ending up in the corner and passing to James he went over for his first try for B’s, but it wasn’t converted. Matt Reid came off in the last ten minutes with a knee injury.
