Berkswell & Balsall Common Mens 1st 6 – Aston University 1st 0

It’s taken a fair proportion of the early season for Berkswell to find their feet but it happened in style this week, with a resounding 6-0 win over Aston University.

[At long last we see the hockey men administer a good stuffing – no jokes intended – honest]

Berkswell started in positive fashion and dominated the early possession. After some good passing at the back the ball was forced wide to Rob Whisson who made a run down the right flank and crossed for Kirby to sweep it in the back of the net.

Aston came back strongly, looking to unleash their quick forward line with long passes. This earned them four short corners in a row.

Berkswell’s defence remained solid coming through this flutter to once again dominate possession. They soon earned a short corner which was dispatched with a vicious shot from Martin Stevens.

Berkswell went into half time with a 2-0 lead after dominating the first half.

The second half continued in much the same way as the first, with Berkswell finding lots of space out on the wings and making the pressure count.

This pressure soon accounted for two more goals, one from Hornby and one from Whisson with a well worked short corner routine. Aston refused to give in though and with the Berkswell midfield tiring a little they began to find more space. The defence stayed resolute though, surviving another series of Aston short corner routines. The game was wrapped up with two more goals from Berkswell with Darren Kirby getting a second and John Tickle also getting on the score sheet.

Berkswell and Balsall Common Ladies 1st v Warwick 2nds 0-2

Balsall went down two goals to nil in the first half through fast breaks from Warwick midfield. During the second half the defence looked more solid whilst the midfield and forwards combined well on the attack, but despite numerous chances they were unable to put any in the back of the net.

Rugby 3 – Berkswell & Balsall Common Mens 2nd 2

The second team narrowly lost out by three goals to two this week to a relitively strong Rugby squad. Berkswell were likely to struggle in the game with a much weakened defence.

Captain Micheal Horeswell faired well moving into the back four and also scored one of the two away goals.

The other was tucked home by Nick Seagrave on his debut for the club.
