Stafford 1sts (3) defeated Berkswell & Balsall Common 1sts (1)

Berkswell and Balsall Common lost their fourth game in a row 3-1 against a strong Stafford, who are joint leaders in the Coaching Solutions First XI League …

Berkswell set their stall out early on defending strongly and breaking quickly, as Stafford struggled to convert pressure for much of the first half.

Chances came and went for Stafford, and they eventually scored 5 minutes before half time.

Berkswell came back strongly and equalised with seconds to go before the half time whistle with a well taken break-away goal from the centre forward who had had worked hard up front and hassled the Stafford defenders.

The second half started in the same manner as the first had ended, with both sides having chances to go ahead as the game opened up. Stafford thought that they had scored early on, but it was ruled out for the Stafford player controlling the ball with his chest. They did however score half way through the half, with ‘keeper Rob Senior unable to deal with the rebound shot from
a penalty corner. The game was seemingly put out of Berkswell’s reach with a few minutes to go before the final whistle as Berkswell failed to deal with a short corner that had broken down. Nevertheless Berkswell continued to put pressure on Stafford and had their own chances, with strong link-up play between the midfielders, but they couldn’t convert.

Ladies League

Leamington 2nds (2) lost to Berkswell & Balsall Common Ladies 1sts (4)

Berkswell continued their fine start to the season with an early goal from Sarah Fulham in the first minute of play.

A strong midfield combined well to set up Kate Stanley and Kate Lloyd to make it 3-0 at half time, with only some excellent saves by the Leam keeper preventing more goals. Leamington came back from the break rejeuvenated to reply with their first goal. A
defensive lapse led to their second from a powerful shot from the penalty corner. However it was not enough and Kate Tyler settled the game with Berkswell’s fourth goal with an accurate strike from just inside the D.
