CraigyB writes “Berkswell’s 1st XI continued their early season struggle with a losing draw away to Atherstone to finish the weekend in the bottom three.

Having bowled and fielded really well to restrict Atherstone to 205-9, the batsmen flattered to deceive making a solid start before ending their innings well short on 166-8.During a post-match interview skipper Paddy Milnes focused on the positive aspects of the day recalling,

“Nobody died” …

And thank goodness too.

After losing Akhlaq early in the innings Nadeem Bhatti (52) and Mike Weir (53) steadied the ship, only for it to spring a huge leak.

“On paper we’re a good batting side” said a bemused Milnes, “unfortunately we don’t play on paper, we play on grass and that’s a much trickier surface”

Berkswell can take great solace from the fact Nadeem Bhatti is batting consistently while Paul Thomas and Sultan Khan are emerging as prominent bowlers who can share the burden with long serving left arm spinner Amjad.

“Once we win our first game we’ll be well away.” said Milnes.

Let’s hope so!
